Principal oboe at the Kanata Symphony Orchestra, private oboe teacher at Centre d'Excellence Artistique de l'Ontario and guest soloist for local churches and choirs, Robin “des Hautbois” studied oboe at Conservatoire de Montréal with Bernard Jean (a figure-head for chamber-music in Québec) and obtained a degree in Music at McGill University, after which he performed for various military bands and production orchestras.

Opting to earn a living in Software Engineering allows Robin to pursue more intricate unaccompanied and chamber repertoire that is less accessible to struggling young professionals. This freedom allows Robin to study the impact of instrument selection on performance and overcoming evermore common physical ailments.

Robin is passionate about the international community that exists within the oboe world. As such, he is a proud member of the IDRS and adminstrator of 2 Facebook groups: "Oboe in the Wold" and "of How Many Reeds..." These communities bridge the boundaries of nations and allow people from all continents to meet and form friendships while spreading the wondrous variety of musical culture.  In less than 10 years, his blog (RobinDesHautbois.blogspot.com) has reached 98 countries, having been visited a third of a million times, while his Facebook and You-Tube presence established close ties all over the world to amateur enthusiasts and prestigious professionals alike.

Why Robin "des Hautbois"?

Predictably, Robin Hood is my namesake:
in French, that's Robin des Bois (Robin of the Woods).

The origin of the word oboe is the french word hautbois (high-society woodwind).

This lends seamlessly to: Robin des (Haut)Bois! (Robin of the Oboes)
